Peter Schmeichel has slammed Erik ten Hag for not featuring young striker Ethan Wheatley in Manchester United ‘s 3-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.
“When I hear Ten Hag talk about his ideas, he says he has a plan, he has structure. Has discipline. Do you see that in the team? I don’t see it. Haven’t seen it for a long time,” Schmeichel said.
“I don’t get it, we’re 3-0 down. You’ve got a young lad (Wheatley) on the bench. Who at youth level has scored a lot of goals for the first team, we’re 3-0 down, why not play him?”
“He took Cerci off, he took the striker off, why not give him 10 minutes? If he scores, that needs to change, doesn’t it? Because that gives him more options as a manager. Why not?”
“In our era, when I was a senior player. We had five young players in the team at the same time and sometimes. If the plan doesn’t work out, you have to try if you have them on the bench.”
Wheatley was unuse substitute in the game, having made his United debut in a 4-2 win over Sheffield United in April.
The 18-year-old is regarded as one of the Red Devils’ most promising young players and Schmeichel believes the forward deserves a chance, even as a substitute.
